BitMEX Review 2026: Exchange Closed — How to Withdraw Your Funds
BitMEX, the crypto derivatives exchange operated by HDR Global Trading Limited, ceased operating on 23 September 2026 after 11 years. The operator announced the closure on 23 July 2026 and stopped new registrations, allowed only position-reducing trades from 26 August and ended trading at 04:00 UTC on 23 September. According to the company, the closure followed a strategic review and was not related to legal or regulatory issues.
What it means for you: if you still have funds on BitMEX, log in on the official website and request a withdrawal (extra identity checks may apply). API withdrawals were disabled on 28 September — only the web platform works. Beware of fake “fund recovery” offers. Status as of 25 October 2026.

1. Why BitMEX closed
On 23 July 2026 HDR Global Trading announced that, after a strategic review, it would close the exchange. The company stressed that the decision was not linked to legal or regulatory matters and that its assets exceeded its liabilities (pointing to its Proof of Reserves and Liabilities page). Timeline: 23 July — registrations closed; 26 August — position-reducing trades only; 23 September, 04:00 UTC — trading ended and remaining positions were liquidated.
2. How to withdraw from BitMEX
- Go only to the official website www.bitmex.com (check the address bar).
- Log in and complete identity verification (KYC) if required.
- Request a withdrawal on the website (API withdrawals have been disabled since 28 September 2026).
- If you have account problems, open a ticket at support.bitmex.com.
Former country restrictions were lifted solely for withdrawals; sanctioned jurisdictions remain restricted. Details: BitMEX jurisdiction policy.
3. Beware of “fund recovery” scams
BitMEX warns that it will never ask for your private keys, seed phrases or any payment in connection with fund distributions. If someone contacts you offering help to recover funds, do not engage and report it to [email protected].
4. History and penalties
BitMEX was founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed; its operator, HDR Global Trading Limited, was incorporated in the Seychelles. The exchange was known for highly leveraged perpetual bitcoin contracts — and for its problems with US law.
- 2016 — BitMEX introduces perpetual futures, which become its most popular product.
- 2019 — Bloomberg reports that the US CFTC is investigating whether the exchange let Americans trade.
- 1 October 2020 — Hayes, Delo, Reed and Gregory Dwyer are indicted in the US for violating the Bank Secrecy Act (no anti-money-laundering programme).
- 2022 — the founders plead guilty; each pays a $10 million fine and is sentenced to probation.
- July 2024 — the company pleads guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act; on 15 January 2025 it is fined $100 million (US Attorney’s Office, SDNY).
- 27 March 2025 — US President Donald Trump pardons four former BitMEX executives and staff (Hayes, Delo, Reed, Dwyer) and the company HDR Global Trading itself — hours before the fine was due.
- 23 July 2026 — closure announced; 23 September 2026 — trading ends; 28 September 2026 — API withdrawals switched off.
5. How BitMEX perpetual contracts worked — and why they were so risky
A perpetual swap is a derivative with no expiry date. To keep its price close to the bitcoin market price, every eight hours the two sides settled a funding rate: when the contract traded above the market, long positions paid shorts; when it traded below, shorts paid longs.
- Leverage up to 100x — the margin was then 1% of the position, so a price move of less than 1% against you meant liquidation.
- Insurance fund and auto-deleveraging — when a liquidated position lost more than its margin, the exchange’s fund covered the gap, and in extreme cases the exchange closed part of other traders’ profitable positions.
- Bitcoin-denominated margin — on the flagship XBTUSD contract, margin and profit were counted in BTC, so a falling price also cut the value of your collateral.
For comparison, EU retail clients may trade crypto CFDs with leverage of no more than 1:2, and only licensed investment firms (MiFID II) may offer them.
6. Alternatives
Since 1 July 2026, crypto-asset services in the EU may only be provided by MiCA-authorised firms. Check an exchange’s status in the ESMA register and in our reviews: Kraken, Bybit, OKX. Crypto-assets are not covered by investor compensation schemes.
MiCA-authorised exchanges we review
| Exchange | EU company | Regulator’s country | Founded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken | Payward Europe Solutions Limited | Ireland | 2011 |
| Bybit | Bybit EU GmbH | Austria | 2018 |
| OKX | OKX Europe Limited | Malta | 2017 |
We compare exchanges whose reviews we have updated — figures come from the tables in those reviews. MiCA (Regulation 2023/1114) requires, among other things, segregation of client crypto-assets and a complaints procedure, but it does not guarantee your money back — crypto-assets are not covered by compensation schemes. Crypto derivatives such as BitMEX’s contracts fall under MiFID II, not MiCA.
7. Taxes and storing withdrawn crypto
- Moving crypto from BitMEX to your own wallet is not a sale in itself; tax usually arises when you dispose of crypto, but the rules depend on your country of residence — check with your tax authority or adviser.
- Keep your BitMEX trade and withdrawal history — after the closure it may be your only proof of acquisition costs.
- If you store crypto yourself, never share your seed phrase or private keys and keep them offline; larger amounts belong in a hardware wallet. If you prefer an exchange, choose a MiCA-authorised platform.

?️ How we checked this review
On 25 October 2026 we checked BitMEX’s jurisdiction policy (updated 24 September 2026, closure and withdrawal information), the redirect of the former platform addresses to the account-closure page, the SDNY press release on the January 2025 sentence, reports on the 27 March 2025 pardons, the BitMEX entry on Wikipedia (company history) and industry reports on the closure timeline. Data on MiCA exchanges comes from our reviews.
Risk: crypto-assets are highly volatile and are not covered by investor compensation schemes; leveraged products can lead to rapid loss of all capital. This article is for information only and is not investment advice.
