The widest token selection in this comparison, a MiCA licence from Malta and an additional payments authorisation. We hold the score back for the ongoing migration of EEA clients and unconfirmed local currency funding.

Description

Gate Review 2026: MiCA Licence, Gate Europe and What Changed for EEA Users

Gate — long known as Gate.io — is one of the oldest exchanges in the market, operating since 2013 and listing one of the widest selections of tokens anywhere. For anyone in the European Economic Area, one structural fact now matters more than the size of that catalogue: service to EEA clients has moved to a separate, licensed Maltese company, and accounts are being migrated to it.

This review explains which legal entity you actually contract with, who supervises it, and what the migration means in practice. It also states plainly what we could not confirm — because in writing about money, silence about an unknown is more dangerous than the unknown itself.

Disclosure: this review contains affiliate links. If you open an account through our link, ForexRev may receive a commission. It does not shape the verdict — we flag the delisting risk and the unconfirmed local funding options openly, even though both argue against signing up.

In short

  • MiCA licence: yes. Gate Technology Limited, supervised by the MFSA (Malta), authorised 29 September 2025, passported across 29 EEA states.
  • A second licence: the company also holds a Payment Institution authorisation under PSD2, covering regulated fiat payment services.
  • Migration: EEA clients are being moved from the global platform to the European one. The process is progressive, not a single switch-over.
  • Main strength: an unusually broad token selection, including assets you will not find on exchanges focused only on the majors.
  • Main risk: that same breadth brings regular delistings and thin liquidity outside the major pairs.

Does Gate have a MiCA licence?

Yes. The crypto-asset service provider (CASP) authorisation is held by Gate Technology Limited, registered in Malta, and was granted by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) on 29 September 2025. The entity appears in the official ESMA register, and the licence covers operating a trading platform, exchanging crypto-assets, custody and transfers.

Through passporting, a Maltese authorisation is valid across all EEA states — no separate national approval is required, and in several member states none is currently being issued at all.

There is a rarer second element: a Payment Institution authorisation under PSD2, the EU directive governing payment services. In practice this means the handling of traditional currency — deposits and withdrawals — falls under an additional supervisory regime, separate from MiCA.

The practical consequence: the authority that handles complaints about Gate is the MFSA in Malta. Worth knowing before a problem arises.

Gate.io or Gate.com — which platform do you land on?

This causes the most confusion, because the brand operates under two addresses and the change is recent.

  • The global platform — historically Gate.io, operated by an entity outside the European Union.
  • Gate Europe — run by the licensed Maltese company and intended for EEA clients.

The exchange has confirmed that in-scope services for EEA residents are being progressively transitioned to the European platform, and encourages users to complete the migration early. The operative word is “progressively” — the announcement sets out a structured process rather than a single hard cut-off for every service.

What this means for you: if you are opening an account today, make sure you are registering on the European platform, because that determines which entity you contract with and which authority protects you. If you hold an older account, check whether it has already been migrated rather than assuming it happened automatically.

Funding in local currencies — what we could not confirm

Here we owe readers honesty. We could not confirm which local European currencies Gate Europe supports for deposits — nor that it does not support them.

What we do know: the company holds a payment institution authorisation, and such an authorisation opens the door to handling local currencies and integrating local payment methods. That is not the same as those options being live in your account panel today.

How to check this in a minute, before you deposit anything: after registering and completing verification, open the funding section and look at the list of currencies and methods available for your country. It is the only source that is never out of date — and it is a habit worth applying to every exchange, not just this one.

If funding in your local currency is a hard requirement, compare the licensed alternatives in our crypto exchange section.

Token selection — a real advantage with a real risk

Gate has long stood out for a very broad list of traded assets, reaching far beyond the largest projects. For some investors that is the entire reason to open an account.

The same characteristic carries risks that reviews rarely spell out:

  • Delisting is normal and recurring on wide-catalogue exchanges. A token listed today may not be listed next year, and you will have a defined window to react.
  • Liquidity outside the major pairs is often thin, so the price you actually get on a larger order can differ noticeably from the quoted one.
  • Not every listed token sits under the same regulatory regime as the exchange service itself — a platform licence is not a quality certificate for every instrument on it.

The fee model

Gate prices spot trading on the familiar maker/taker model, with tiers based on volume and on holding the exchange’s own token. Specific rates change too often to present as durable fact; the mechanism does not:

  • Maker/taker — cheaper when you add liquidity with a limit order, more expensive when you take it with a market order.
  • Volume tiers — occasional traders stay in the top tier, so the advertised “from” rate does not apply to them.
  • Deposit and withdrawal costs can exceed the trading fee entirely — check them separately.

Verified: September 2026. Check the current schedule on the exchange’s own site.

Gate compared with other licensed exchanges

Exchange MiCA licence Entity and supervisor
Gate yes Gate Technology Ltd — MFSA, Malta
Kraken yes Payward Europe Solutions Ltd — Ireland
Bybit EU yes Bybit EU GmbH — FMA, Austria
Coinbase yes CSSF, Luxembourg
Binance no withdrew its application, ended EU service

It is worth noting that Gate obtained its MiCA licence earlier than several far better-known platforms, while Binance — for years the default choice across Europe — did not obtain one at all and ceased serving EU clients on 1 July 2026.

Is Gate safe?

The regulatory layer: the Maltese entity is supervised by the MFSA and bound by MiCA obligations, including segregation of client funds from the company’s own assets and formal complaint procedures. The additional payment authorisation adds a second, independent supervisory regime over the movement of traditional currency. That is a stronger arrangement than platforms operating without authorisation.

The practical layer: the exchange has run since 2013, a long record in this industry. But it must be said plainly: a licence is not a solvency guarantee and does not function like a bank deposit protection scheme.

The universal rule applies regardless of paperwork: do not keep on an exchange money you cannot afford to lose. Our guide on how to verify a licence explains how to check an entity’s status yourself.

Pros and cons

Strengths:

  • MiCA licence from the MFSA plus a separate PSD2 payment institution authorisation.
  • Exceptionally broad token selection, hard for majors-only exchanges to match.
  • Long operating record — active since 2013.
  • Licence obtained earlier than many more prominent competitors.

Weaknesses:

  • Local currency funding options unconfirmed — verify in the panel before depositing.
  • Migration of EEA clients is progressive, which is confusing when opening an account.
  • Regular delistings require watching the exchange’s announcements.
  • Thin liquidity outside major pairs affects execution quality.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gate have a MiCA licence?

Yes. Gate Technology Limited received CASP authorisation from the Maltese MFSA on 29 September 2025, passported across 29 EEA states. The entity is listed in the ESMA register.

Can EEA residents still use Gate after July 2026?

Yes, through the licensed European platform. In-scope services for EEA clients are being progressively transitioned to Gate Technology Ltd.

Is Gate a safe exchange?

It holds a MiCA licence and an additional payment authorisation, is supervised by the MFSA and has operated since 2013. A licence is not, however, a solvency guarantee or an equivalent of deposit protection.

Why does Gate delist tokens?

Delisting is standard practice on wide-catalogue exchanges — driven by low liquidity, project problems or regulatory requirements. Watch the announcements, because there is a defined window to act.

Is Gate the same as Baldur's Gate?

No — the names simply coincide. Gate is a crypto exchange with no connection to video games.
