Thursday’s Sell-Off! Geopolitics, ECB, and Japanese Billions Shape Today’s Currencies and Indices

Thursday, July 23, brings a rollercoaster of emotions to the financial markets. We are witnessing a classic “Risk-Off” sentiment on European trading floors, triggered by cooling diplomatic relations and incoming macroeconomic data. Meanwhile, forex traders are bracing for the afternoon showdown with the European Central Bank (ECB) and digesting a massive trade deal worth hundreds of billions of dollars between the United States and Japan.

⚡ Morning Market & Forex Summary (July 23, 2026):

  • Weak Sentiment in Europe: The old continent continues to grapple with earnings concerns. In Warsaw, the WIG20 blue-chip index opened at 3859 points, recording a flat 0.4% drop.
  • Dollar Gains Strength After Tokyo Deal: Japan has committed to investing an astronomical $550 billion in the US (with the US keeping 90% of the profits and tariffs set at 15%). The Polish Zloty reacted immediately with weakness—the USD/PLN pair jumped toward the 3.79 PLN mark.
  • Zloty Stable but Faces Hidden Risks: The EUR/PLN exchange rate hovers around 4.33 PLN, while the Swiss Franc is priced at 4.67 PLN. The market is anxiously watching for potential rate cuts by the Monetary Policy Council (RPP), which the NBP president unexpectedly hinted at recently.

The US-Japan Deal: Trump Boosts the “Greenback”

This move was impossible to miss in the Asian markets. The negotiating success of American diplomacy led to an asymmetrical agreement supporting US capital. The Japanese promise to transfer massive funds immediately strengthened the US Dollar. Strong bullish pressure was evident across major crosses with the Japanese currency, and investors long on the dollar basket are quietly hoping these massive investments will offset any pressure from potential autumn rate cuts by the Federal Reserve (FED).

Waiting for the ECB and Unemployment Data

Meanwhile, all of Europe is waiting for signals from Frankfurt. Today at 2:15 PM CET, the European Central Bank will issue a crucial decision on interest rates. The market does not expect drastic moves (the consensus assumes maintaining the main refinancing rate at 2.40% and the deposit rate at 2.25%), but traders on the EUR/USD pair (currently quoted around 1.1410) will listen closely to the press conference scheduled for 2:45 PM.

The main theme of the ECB board’s speech is expected to be its response to the cooling industrial sector and deteriorating consumer sentiment. Today’s readings from the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) also showed that in June 2026, the unemployment rate in Poland returned to 5.8%. This is a warning sign for the local economy, which may explain the cautious behavior of investors on the Warsaw trading floor.

How Will the Zloty React?

The Polish Zloty remains at relatively stable levels: the Swiss Franc is trading at 4.67 PLN, and the British Pound is testing resistance above 5.07 PLN. However, it is worth remembering that in early July, the NBP president shocked the market by suggesting that the Monetary Policy Council could start cutting interest rates sooner than expected. Such monetary policy, contrasted with a “hawkish” ECB, is a ticking time bomb that could significantly lower the value of the Polish currency in the coming months. Any afternoon statements from the ECB suggesting no monetary easing will be a signal for those shorting PLN to buy Euros.
