DEGIRO Review 2026: Fees, Safety, Stocks and ETFs
DEGIRO is a European stock and ETF broker with, by its own figures, more than 3 million clients. Its services are provided by flatexDEGIRO Bank Dutch Branch, the Dutch branch of the German bank flatexDEGIRO Bank SE, supervised by BaFin (and in the Netherlands by the AFM and DNB). DEGIRO offers shares, ETFs, bonds, funds, options and futures on exchanges worldwide.
In short: DEGIRO is one of the cheapest ways to invest in stocks and ETFs in Europe. In most countries US shares cost €1 commission plus a €1 handling fee and Core Selection ETFs €0 plus €1, with no inactivity, custody, deposit or withdrawal fees. The drawbacks: a €2.50 yearly connectivity fee for each foreign exchange you use, 0.25% on currency conversion, no CFDs and limited tax reporting. Fees differ slightly by country; we checked DEGIRO’s fee pages on 25 October 2026.

1. Is DEGIRO safe?
Yes. DEGIRO operates as flatexDEGIRO Bank Dutch Branch, the Dutch branch of German bank flatexDEGIRO Bank SE, supervised primarily by BaFin and, in the Netherlands, by the AFM and DNB.
- Cash: DEGIRO opens a bank account in your name at flatexDEGIRO Bank; uninvested cash is covered by the German deposit guarantee scheme up to €100,000.
- Securities are held by a separate special-purpose entity (SPV) that by law may not conduct commercial activities, so they would not fall into DEGIRO’s estate.
- Parent company flatexDEGIRO is listed in Frankfurt.
Investing involves the risk of losing some or all of your money.
2. Fees and commissions
DEGIRO’s fees vary slightly by country. Typical examples (Poland and France, 2026):
| Fee | DEGIRO |
|---|---|
| US shares | €1 + €1 handling fee |
| Home-market shares | e.g. Euronext Paris €1 + €1; Warsaw 1 PLN + 10 PLN |
| Core Selection ETFs | €0 + €1 handling fee |
| Other ETFs | €2 + €1 |
| Options and futures | €0.75 per contract |
| Currency conversion (AutoFX) | 0.25% |
| Connectivity fee | €2.50 per foreign exchange per year (max 0.25% of account); not for your home market or Core Selection ETFs |
| Inactivity, custody, deposits, withdrawals | €0 |
Example: buying $1,000 of a US stock from a euro account costs €1 + €1 plus 0.25% conversion (about €2.30) — roughly €4.30 — plus €2.50 once a year for access to the US exchange.
3. Products
- Shares and ETFs on European, US and Asian exchanges.
- Bonds and investment funds.
- Options and futures for experienced investors.
- Leveraged products and certificates (BNP Paribas, Société Générale).
- No CFDs.
4. Platform and app
DEGIRO has its own web platform and mobile app (iOS, Android) with quotes, charts, watchlists and reports. There is no MetaTrader — DEGIRO is built for investing in securities, not CFD trading.
5. Deposits, withdrawals and currencies
- DEGIRO charges no fees for deposits or withdrawals.
- Your cash sits in a bank account in your name at flatexDEGIRO Bank, covered by the German deposit guarantee scheme up to €100,000.
- Trades in foreign currencies are converted automatically by AutoFX (0.25%); alternatively you can hold a foreign-currency balance and convert manually (€10 + 0.25%).
- Deposits must come from a bank account in your own name; withdrawals go back to that reference account.
If you mainly buy US shares, compare the two options: AutoFX costs 0.25% on each trade, while a manual conversion costs €10 + 0.25% once — worth it only for larger amounts you plan to invest in dollars over time.
6. Pros, cons and verdict

8. How to open a DEGIRO account — step by step
- Register on the DEGIRO website — EU clients should be served by an EU company: flatexDEGIRO Bank Dutch Branch (Amsterdam), branch of flatexDEGIRO Bank SE. Check the company name in your client agreement before depositing.
- Enter your personal details and complete the questionnaire.
- Verify your identity with a passport or ID card and a proof of address (e.g. a utility bill or bank statement), as required by anti-money-laundering rules.
- Choose the account type and base currency. An account in the currency you deposit in saves conversion costs.
- Fund the account. Deposits are accepted only from accounts or cards in your own name.
- Log in to the trading platform in your browser or the mobile app. Before investing a larger amount, test how orders work with a small trade or on a demo account, if the broker offers one.
9. What trading with DEGIRO really costs
Below are the costs from the summary table above — taken from DEGIRO’s website and documents when we updated this review:
- US shares: €1 commission + €1 handling fee
- ETFs: Core Selection €0 + €1; other ETFs €2 + €1
- Options and futures: €0.75 per contract
- Connectivity fee: €2.50 per foreign exchange per year (max. 0.25% of account value)
Inactivity fee: €0. If you plan a long break from trading, withdraw your funds or close the account so the fee does not eat into your balance.
10. Withdrawing money from DEGIRO — how it works
You request a withdrawal in the client area. Under anti-money-laundering rules, funds usually go back via the method used to deposit (e.g. to the card up to the amount deposited by card) and only to an account or card in your own name. The first withdrawal may require full account verification, so upload your documents right after registering. Only free funds that are not used as margin can be withdrawn.
11. DEGIRO compared with other brokers
For comparison, here is DEGIRO next to other brokers whose reviews we updated in October 2026. Figures come from their summary tables — see the full reviews for details.

| EXANTE | EXT LTD, Cyprus (reg. no. HE 293592) | €10,000 / £10,000 or equivalent (individual) | €50/month — only if no trade for 6+ months, no open positions and balance below… |
12. How your shares and cash are protected
Buying shares, ETFs or bonds with DEGIRO outright involves no leverage and no CFDs — you cannot lose more than you invest. Client securities are held separately from the company’s own assets, so they are not part of the estate if the firm goes bankrupt. Cash is protected by the guarantee scheme of the country where the company operates: in the EU, investor compensation schemes cover at least EUR 20,000 and bank deposit guarantees up to EUR 100,000 per client.
Options, futures or buying with money borrowed from the broker are leveraged — losses can be larger and faster than with a plain share purchase.
13. Tax on profits from DEGIRO
Tax treatment depends on your country of residence. DEGIRO generally does not file tax returns for you, so keep the annual statement of trades from the client area. For Polish residents: profits from a foreign broker are reported in the PIT-38 return (19% tax), with foreign-currency amounts converted at the National Bank of Poland average rate from the business day before each trade.
