eToro Review 2026: Fees, Stocks and ETFs, CopyTrader and MiCA-Licensed Crypto

eToro is an investment platform known for CopyTrader. EU clients are served by eToro (Europe) Ltd, a CySEC-regulated Cyprus investment firm that has also held a MiCA crypto-asset service provider authorisation since 16 January 2025 (ESMA register).

In short: eToro is a convenient choice for stocks, ETFs and crypto with social features. Per the EU fee page: zero-commission ETFs, stocks at $1 per open and close ($2 on exchanges in Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Tokyo), crypto at 1%, and no inactivity or management fees. Drawbacks: deposits in currencies other than your account currency are converted, a $5 withdrawal fee from the USD account and FX CFDs that cost more than at specialist forex brokers. Checked on 25 October 2026.

1. Is eToro safe?

Yes. eToro (Europe) Ltd is supervised by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) and serves other EU countries under the EU passport. Client money is held in segregated accounts, retail clients have negative balance protection, and the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund (ICF) covers eligible claims up to €20,000. For crypto, the company is listed in ESMA’s MiCA register of crypto-asset service providers — authorised by CySEC on 16 January 2025. eToro is not on the Polish regulator KNF’s public warning list (checked 25 October 2026).

2. Fees: stocks, ETFs, crypto, CFDs

  • Stocks: $1 commission per open and per close ($2 on exchanges in Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Tokyo), charged in USD. Short and leveraged stock positions are CFDs — no commission, but a 0.15% spread and overnight fees.
  • ETFs: zero commission, no custody or overnight fees (for non-CFD positions).
  • Crypto: 1% of the position for Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers; lower rates for Platinum, Platinum+ and Diamond.
  • FX, index and commodity CFDs: open/close spread (e.g. 0.005% on EUR/USD) plus the market spread; eToro quotes currencies from about 1 pip. Positions held overnight pay an overnight fee.
  • Account: free to open and maintain, no inactivity fee (per the fee page on 25 October 2026).

3. What it costs in practice — a $1,000 example

Suppose you already have $1,000 in your USD account (a deposit in another currency is converted first — the cost depends on the payment method and your eToro Club tier). Based on eToro’s fee page checked on 26 October 2026:

  • $1,000 of a US company’s shares: $1 commission to buy and $1 to sell — $2 in total, or 0.2% of the amount. No custody or overnight fees.
  • $1,000 of an ETF: $0 commission — you only pay the market spread, the difference between the buy and sell price.
  • $1,000 of bitcoin: 1% to buy ($10) and 1% to sell (about $10 if the price is unchanged) — about $20 in total, or 2%. Higher eToro Club tiers pay less.
  • Shares listed in London: on top of the commission there is UK Stamp Duty of 0.5% of the purchase value.
  • Withdrawing the profit: $5 from the USD account (minimum $30); free from a local-currency account.

The stock commission does not apply to copied trades (CopyTrader) or to positions opened through recurring investments. Every spread, commission and fee is shown on the order screen before you confirm.

4. Account currency and conversion

Every client has a USD account; local-currency accounts are available in GBP, EUR, AUD and DKK, depending on your country of residence. A deposit in any other currency is converted, and the fee depends on the payment method and your eToro Club tier. Currency conversion may also apply when you invest from a local-currency account in an asset priced in another currency, or move money between the USD and local accounts. Withdrawals from the USD account cost $5 (minimum $30), while local-currency accounts have no withdrawal fee or minimum. Deposits triggered by recurring investments are exempt from the conversion fee.

5. Stock lending, Stock Margin and the crypto wallet

Stock lending. If you opt in, eToro may lend shares from your portfolio to other market participants — depending on demand, so in a given month they may not be lent at all. Gross income is calculated daily: closing price × number of shares × (lending rate / 360). A service cost (currently 15%) is deducted and eToro splits the rest 50/50 with the client. In eToro’s own example (2,000 Tesla shares at $350, a 1% rate, 112 days) the client receives $8.26 a day, or $925.12 for the whole period. The rate can change during the loan.

Stock Margin. You can buy shares partly with money borrowed from eToro while keeping ownership of them. Opening and closing such a position costs 0.15% of the trade value, and each night you pay interest on the borrowed amount. This is leveraged investing: losses grow as fast as gains.

Crypto wallet. Moving crypto-assets from the platform to the eToro Money wallet costs 2% (with a minimum and maximum), and selling crypto for GBP, EUR or USD in that wallet costs 0.6% to 1% depending on your club tier. Short and leveraged crypto positions are executed as CFDs — you do not own the crypto and overnight fees apply.

6. CopyTrader and Smart Portfolios

  • CopyTrader automatically copies the trades of an investor you choose; copying does not remove the risk, and past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
  • Smart Portfolios — thematic portfolios managed by eToro.
  • The Popular Investor programme and eToro Club (discounts that depend on your balance).

7. Pros, cons and verdict

✅ eToro pros

  • EU company (CySEC) with a MiCA crypto licence.
  • Zero-commission ETFs, stocks from $1.
  • No inactivity or account fees.
  • CopyTrader and an easy app.
  • Optional stock lending income.

❌ eToro cons

  • Deposits in other currencies are converted.
  • $5 withdrawal fee from the USD account.
  • FX CFDs cost more than at forex specialists; no MT4/MT5.
  • Crypto costs 1% to buy and 1% to sell.
  • 51% of retail CFD accounts lose money.

ForexRev verdict

eToro is a good choice for stocks, ETFs and crypto with a regulated, MiCA-licensed provider — especially for beginners and CopyTrader users. Active forex traders are better served by specialist brokers with MetaTrader.

8. Alternatives

  • Saxo Bank — Danish bank with 23,000+ stocks and no custody fees.
  • DEGIRO — low-cost stocks and ETFs.
  • XTB — listed broker supervised by the KNF: stocks, ETFs and CFDs.

9. How to open a eToro account — step by step

  1. Register on the eToro website — EU clients should be served by an EU company: eToro (Europe) Ltd (Limassol, Cyprus) — CySEC. Check the company name in your client agreement before depositing.
  2. Enter your personal details and complete the questionnaire. Before offering CFDs, an EU broker must assess your knowledge and experience (the MiFID II appropriateness test) and warn you if CFDs are not appropriate.
  3. Verify your identity with a passport or ID card and a proof of address (e.g. a utility bill or bank statement), as required by anti-money-laundering rules.
  4. Choose the account type and base currency. An account in the currency you deposit in saves conversion costs.
  5. Fund the account. Deposits are accepted only from accounts or cards in your own name.
  6. Install the platform (eToro (web and app), CopyTrader, Smart Portfolios) or log in via your browser. Practise on a demo account first, if the broker offers one.

10. Withdrawing money from eToro — how it works

You request a withdrawal in the client area. Under anti-money-laundering rules, funds usually go back via the method used to deposit (e.g. to the card up to the amount deposited by card) and only to an account or card in your own name. The first withdrawal may require full account verification, so upload your documents right after registering. Only free funds that are not used as margin can be withdrawn.

11. eToro compared with other brokers

For comparison, here is eToro next to other brokers whose reviews we updated in October 2026. Figures come from their summary tables — see the full reviews for details.

Broker Company / regulator Minimum deposit Inactivity fee
Pepperstone Pepperstone EU Limited (Cyprus) €10 (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal) none
Admirals Admirals Europe Ltd (Limassol, Cyprus) Trade and Zero: €100 / $100 €10 per month after 24 months without trading (positive balances only)
FOREX.com StoneX Europe Ltd (Nicosia, Cyprus) 100 units of the account currency €15 per month after 12 months without trades or open positions
Dukascopy Dukascopy Europe IBS AS (Riga, Latvia) $100 up to €50 per 180 days without trading (after the first 180 days)
easyMarkets Easy Forex Trading Ltd (Cyprus) $25 $25 every 6 months after 12 months without trading

12. Leverage and client protection in the EU (ESMA)

As an EU investment firm, eToro applies the restrictions introduced by ESMA and adopted permanently by national regulators to retail clients:

  • leverage up to 1:30 on major currency pairs, 1:20 on other pairs, gold and major indices, 1:10 on other commodities and indices, 1:5 on shares and 1:2 on crypto;
  • margin close-out at 50% of required margin;
  • negative balance protection — retail clients cannot lose more than they deposited;
  • a ban on bonuses and trading incentives for retail CFD clients;
  • a mandatory risk warning with the share of losing retail accounts — for eToro: 51% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider.

Higher leverage is only available to professional clients who meet the MiFID II criteria — at the cost of some protections, including negative balance protection.

13. Tax on profits from eToro

Tax treatment depends on your country of residence. eToro generally does not file tax returns for you, so keep the annual statement of trades from the client area. For Polish residents: profits from a foreign broker are reported in the PIT-38 return (19% tax), with foreign-currency amounts converted at the National Bank of Poland average rate from the business day before each trade.

14. Glossary: terms to know before opening a eToro account

  • Spread — the difference between the buy and sell price, paid on every trade.
  • Pip — the smallest typical price move of a currency pair (0.0001 for EUR/USD).
  • Lot — the standard position size: 1 forex lot is 100,000 units of the base currency; 0.01 lot (micro lot) is 1,000.
  • Commission — a fixed fee per trade, usually on raw-spread (ECN/Raw) accounts.
  • Swap — the daily cost or credit for holding a position overnight, based on the interest-rate differential.
  • Margin — the part of the position value set aside as collateral; at 1:30 leverage about 3.33% of the position.
  • Margin call and stop out — a warning and automatic closing of positions when equity falls relative to required margin.
  • Slippage — execution at a different price than requested, common around news releases and price gaps.

After six months of daily platform use, Stop Loss (SL) orders are closed without the price being reached. Not a single candle touched the SL protection price. My complaint was met with a price table confirming the chart, yet the price still hadn't reached my SL. They consistently engage in this form of theft. Furthermore, when setting a pending order, the candle does not activate it as on other platforms. If an SL is not set, losses are incurred; if a safe one is set, eToro will 'take' it. This issue extends beyond SLs, as securing a favorable position is challenging. One loss is the SL, but a much larger one is an unrealized profitable position. I advise against it. I would not open an account here again.

They state that the minimum amount for trading without authorization is 2000 USD. There were no issues with the deposit, but verification became a problem as I had previously created an account with my number. I contacted support in Polish, with questions about the UI, but received a reply stating that Polish is not supported. They responded in English with the same information: I needed to email my documents for verification.
A week later, they closed my account and investments. During withdrawal, verification was again required, causing further issues. Why, then, was I permitted to deposit funds?

Not recommended. Unintuitive system, unclear withdrawal rules, and constant advertising on almost every page I visit.

Amber also advertised like that - "do nothing and you'll get cash" :/

It is misleading to claim they charge no commissions. They charge significant ones.
