Tesla chief executive Elon Musk stated on X that the automaker will begin winding down Cybertruck manufacturing at its Texas facility around mid-2027. The plant's floor space will instead be allocated to scale production of the Cybercab, a dedicated autonomous vehicle without steering wheels or pedals.
Gigafactory Texas is the sole production facility for the stainless-steel vehicle. Musk did not outline any plans to relocate manufacturing to another plant, later confirming on social media that the decision represents the conclusion of the model's production run while noting its existing fleet will stay on roads for years.
Sales contraction and manufacturing hurdles
When Musk unveiled the vehicle in 2019, he anticipated annual demand reaching roughly 250,000 trucks. However, production difficulties tied to the thick cold-rolled stainless-steel body and retail prices that settled well above early promises dampened consumer adoption.
According to data from Cox Automotive, Tesla delivered 20,237 Cybertrucks in the United States in 2025, dropping 48% from 38,965 units in 2024. A substantial share of recent orders came from Musk's own space exploration firm, with SpaceX spending $131 million on fleet purchases.

Strategic pivot toward autonomous transit
The phase-out signals an acceleration of Tesla's transformation into an artificial intelligence and robotics enterprise. Austin facilities will increasingly prioritise driverless transport and the Optimus humanoid robot, alongside market debate surrounding a potential Tesla SpaceX merger under board consideration.
Wall Street welcomed the capital refocus following heavy post-election tech volatility, with the Nasdaq Composite climbing 1.66% on Friday to 24,718 points. Ending Cybertruck operations removes a complex production line that had constrained vehicle margins.

What to watch next
- Transition milestones at Gigafactory Texas as Cybertruck lines phase out by mid-2027
- Regulatory approvals and testing progress for driverless Cybercab deployments
- Tesla board updates regarding discussions on a potential corporate union with SpaceX
